TORONTO, ONTARIO – OCTOBER 23, 2006 – The Hip-Hop Summit Action Network convenes its first international Hip-Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment at Ryerson University’s Ryerson Theater on Saturday, October 28, 2006. There will be two Hip-Hop Summit sessions on Financial Empowerment incorporating the same program that day, one running from 12:30-2 p.m. and the other from 3-4:30 p.m. HSAN’s partner and title sponsor is Chrysler Financial, which supplies the financial expertise at each Summit.
Participating in the Toronto Hip-Hop Summit will be HSAN co-Chairmen Russell Simmons and Dr. Benjamin Chavis, Chris Brown, Lil X, Lil Mo, Remy Ma, Trina, Killer Mike and Spinderella as the celebrity DJ. MC Lyte will co-moderate with Dr. Chavis. Participating from Chrysler Financial is Gino Cozza, Managing Director for Chrysler Financial Canada.
The Hip-Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment’s “Get Your Money Right” International Tour, now in its second successful year, brings together the powerful combination of hip-hop stars and Chrysler Financial experts to speak to students and community members about the importance of financial literacy.
The Hip-Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment is a grassroots effort to help engage young people in discussions about the importance of personal finance.
The topics to be covered include the basics of banking, home ownership, repairing bad credit and understanding credit scores, entrepreneurship, vehicle financing and more. The “Get Your Money Right” international tour concludes this year in Toronto.
Russell Simmons affirmed, “Our first Hip-Hop Summit in Canada is going to be big. The Toronto Hip-Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment will be the climax of our 2006 Tour. I am looking forward to the Canadian experience where hip-hop is growing strong and the opportunity to share insights on how to ‘Get Your Money Right’ will be fantastic.”
Gino Cozza added, “Learning the basics of personal finance is one of the most beneficial tools an individual can possess. To be in control of one’s finances is a basic life skill. Through the Hip-Hop Summits, we hope to share this information and influence today’s youth to learn and take responsibility for their financial well being.”
Dr. Benjamin Chavis concluded, “The Toronto Hip-Hop Summit on Financial Empowerment will be both a celebration of the evolution and the power of hip-hop culture in Canada and a unique forum for young adults in Toronto to receive vital, life-changing information on financial literacy.”
The “Get Your Money Right” workbook, which will be given to all participants, is available in both English and Spanish and is downloadable on the www.hsan.org site.
