Hip Hop Reader is a youth-based literacy and leadership project being launched with funding from Verizon Foundation through a partnership between National Urban League & Hip Hop Summit Action Network. The New York City pilot is being coordinated in collaboration with New York Urban League and the New York City Board of Education.
Students enrolled in New York City public high schools can earn prize-redeemable points for passing on-line multiple choice quizzes that verify that they read from a suggested reading list compiled by the Leadership Council, and for participating in local Hip-Hop Reader events including reading ciphers and issue forums.
The Hip-Hop Reader Leadership Council selects the reading list. The Council consists of hip-hop artists, educators, writers/authors, actors, youth representatives, and other community leaders.
The reading list includes books, song lyrics, poetry, and other reading materials that members of the Leadership Council recommends.
Students can use their redeemed points to order prizes donated by merchandise sponsors, which include Phat Farm, Baby Phat, and Microsoft.
Prizes will be shipped to students via their schools on a monthly basis by the project’s shipping partner.
The Hip-Hop Reader was unveiled at a launch rally on 03/06/04 at the Schomburg Center.
